NASHIK: Nashik police arrested six persons on Thursday, including the head of a 'jaat panchayat' (community body), for excommunicating some families over the issue of an inter-caste marriage.
Anna Hingmire and members of four other families, all belonging to the Joshi-Kurbude community, a nomadic tribe, had lodged a complaint with the police that they had been excommunicated by the panchayat.
This had happened about a year ago, when Hingmire's daughter married a youth belonging to the Jain community. The incident was first reported by Sakal, following which the administration and the police swung into action to effect arrests.
According to the complaint, Hingmire's son and daughter-in-law were recently, not allowed to attend a wedding within the community because his daughter had married outside their caste.
A fine of Rs 500 was also imposed on them. Police arrested Bhaskar Shinde (president of the jaat panchayat), Shivaji Kumbharkar, Laxman Shinde, Ramnath Dhumal, Bhima Dhumal and Madhukar Kumbharkar on Thursday.
Those arrested have been booked under sections 384 (extortion), 504 (insult to provoke breach of public peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation), said ACP Ganesh Shinde.
Last month, Eknath Kumbharkar, a member of the Joshi-Kurkude community, was arrested for murdering his 18 year-old daughter for marrying outside the caste.
The statements of the complainants were being recorded at Gangapur police station till late in the night. Dagdu Garad and Baburao Dhumal arrived from Aurangabad in the afternoon. Their statements were also being recorded. “The community body of our religion is registered and these complainants are from the same family. A woman from among the complainants, married for the second time, despite having a family,” Bhaskar Shinde argued.
